Autistic Teen Made Honorary Firefighter for a Day

Gastonia, NC -  "Ever since 9/11; I know even though I was only five when 9/11 happened, as soon as I heard what happened that day, I wanted to be a firefighter," Jacob Huffman said.

Jacob Huffman, 19, has autism and on Wednesday, he received the chance to live out his dream thanks to someone he's known since the second grade.

Brandon Campbell has been best friends with Jacob and set the whole day up, with help from everyone at Union Road Volunteer Fire Department.

Rooted in Rights: Workers with Disabilities Are NOT Always Protected by Minimum Wage Laws

I bet you didn't know? Please take the time to watch this short film! Then take action!

Rooted in Rights is a community for people with disabilities, disability rights advocates and their friends, families and allies.

Workers with disabilities are NOT always protected by minimum wage laws, and so sometimes they are paid as little as pennies per hour - and this can be perfectly legal!

Rooted in Rights’ new original documentary, Bottom Dollars, tells the stories of people with disabilities all over the country who are fighting back against exploitation and discrimination. And it tells the stories of those who are working in the community for real wages because they received the proper services and supports. Their stories prove we can do better.

We need YOUR help to get the word out. Starting in October, we’ll be giving the film away for free to those who host a screening in their community to spread the word about this unfair practice. Go to BottomDollarsMovie.com to sign up and find out more. Together, we’ll fight for equal employment opportunities for everybody.
