New Barbie Range Features Dolls In Wheelchairs And With Prosthetic Limbs

What do people think?

In a bid to represent a more diverse range of women, Barbie has introduced two new dolls with disabilities – one that uses a wheelchair and another with a prosthetic leg.

Yesterday, Mattel announced the latest additions to its Fashionista line and explained that the launch is designed to “elevate the conversation around physical disabilities” while further showcasing “a multi-dimensional view of beauty and fashion”.

The new dolls come hot off the back of increased customer demand and the global firm worked with founder of nonprofit organisation, Born Just Right, Jordan Reeves – who has a prosthetic arm – to ensure the new dolls are as realistic as possible.

Walmart Is Eliminating Greeters. Workers With Disabilities Feel Targeted

Walmart's new approach eliminates jobs for many workers with disabilities across the country. What do you think? Will it change your shopping habits?
#employmentfirst #boycottwalmart

If you ask John Combs what his biggest worry is, he'll say: "How will I feed Red?"

Red is actually white. He's a labradoodle rescue, just tall enough for Combs to pet if he reaches over the armrest of his wheelchair. Combs, 42, has cerebral palsy. He has difficulty speaking. But he has no difficulty saying the line most Americans have heard at least once: "Welcome to Walmart!"

Combs has one of Walmart's trademark front-door jobs: He's a "people greeter" at a store in Vancouver, Wash. But, he was told, come April 25 his job is going away. And he is not alone. According to Walmart, greeters are being removed at about 1,000 stores around the country.

NPR has found that Walmart is changing the job requirements for front-door greeters in a way that appears to disproportionately affect workers with disabilities. Greeters with disabilities in five states told NPR they expect to lose their jobs after April 25 or 26.

When A Newton Family Welcomed a Baby Who Is Deaf, 20 Neighbors Learned Sign Language

NEWTON — Something small and profound is happening here along the banks of the Charles River. It’s a love story.

It’s a story of a little girl who’s deaf.

It’s a story of neighbors who’ve raised their own children and are now embracing a beautiful 2-year-old named Samantha.

It’s a story of 20 neighbors who sit in silence to learn a new language so their littlest neighbor will know what their kids have always known: Community. Friendship. Inclusion.

“This child will always be a child of this neighborhood,’’ said Terry Nowak, who grew up and raised three children here.

“We will all be participants in helping her as she grows. We do that with each other’s children. The community is already in place. This is just a new way to express it.’’

Meet The Kenyan Engineer Who Created Gloves That Turn Sign Language Into Audible Speech

Twenty-five-year-old Kenyan engineer and innovator, Roy Allela, has created a set of gloves that will ultimately allow better communication between those who are deaf and those who are hearing yet may not necessarily know sign language. The Sign-IO gloves in essence translate signed hand movements into audible speech.

Allela's gloves feature sensors located on each finger that detect the positioning of each finger, including how much each finger will bend into a given position. The glove connects via Bluetooth to an Android phone which then will leverage use the text-to-speech function to provide translated speech to the hand gestures of a person signing.

Super Bowl Ad Stars Kids With Disabilities

A commercial airing during the Super Bowl will feature a group of children with disabilities and hype a product geared toward them.

Microsoft said it will run an advertisement during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s big game on CBS promoting its Xbox Adaptive Controller.

A version of the spot that’s already available online shows children with various disabilities and their parents talking about how the adaptive device has helped level the playing field. During the Super Bowl, a condensed, 60-second version will air.
