But all that changed Thursday when Trey asked Ellie to be his prom date. Trey -- a star on Eastern High School's basketball team in Louisville, Kentucky, who's headed to play college ball next year at Ball State -- was originally going to take his girlfriend to Eastern's prom. For the fourth consecutive year, the Washington Wizards collaborated with Special Olympics DC for their annual “Spread the Word to End the Word” awareness day, aimed at ending the hurtful use of the R-word negatively impacting people with intellectual disabilities. John Wall and and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt served as honorary referees, while Ramon Session and Marcin Gortat coached Team Wildcats and Garrett Temple and Otto Porter coached Team Bullets. DeJuan Blair will serve as the public address announcer for the evening.
Children and adults with developmental delays and disabilities are the beneficiaries of the community’s generosity and compassion once again, said Connie Oetken, director of development at Sunflower Diversified Services. Sunflower’s 10th Annual Charity Gala raised $61,000, which will help infants, toddlers and adults who participate in the many programs provided by the non-profit agency. “We have learned over the years that central Kansans care about the people we serve, as well as their families,” Oetken said. “But we are always overwhelmed by how far people will go to make life a little easier for their neighbors. It was just a normal day at a McDonald’s in Rome when six men wearing tuxedos entered the place singing a special melody with their beautiful voices.
