Artist with Cerebral Palsy Finds Global Success Thanks to Facebook

Unable to speak, confined to a wheelchair, and a successful artist: social networking has helped the artist Michael Hanrahan, or Stigy, to sell his paintings around the world

Michael Hanrahan has cerebral palsy. He cannot speak: he uses his head to type on an oversized keyboard, and he is confined to a wheelchair for most of the day.

He is also a successful artist, known as Stigy – a longstanding nickname after his brother read the book Stig of the Dump as a child – who takes commissions from round the world, and has gathered a devoted fanbase. In the social media age, platforms like Facebook have helped Hanrahan's career, and his personal life, take flight.

"I wouldn't have been able to do any of this without the internet and social networks," he says. "You need to know people, you need to meet people, and without websites like Facebook and Artfinder it would have been so much harder."
