Virginia Becomes First State to Implement ABLE Act, Helping Families With Special Needs Children

ARLINGTON, Va. (WJLA) – Virginia is leading the way in an effort to help children with special needs, and their families could not be more proud.

On Tuesday in Arlington, Governor Terry McAuliffe joined families for the signing of the ABLE Act, which is short for “Achieving a Better Life Experience.” This past session the Virginia General Assembly followed the federal government’s lead to pass the ABLE Act. Beginning July 1, the legislation will allow individuals with special needs and their families to set up tax-exempt accounts, like 529s, so they can save money for future living expenses like housing and transportation.
