A 23-year-old cerebral palsy suffer, who is blind and unable
to verbally communicate, has built up a flourishing business selling specialty
recipe mixes for food and drinks.
Patrick Lewis, from Stowe, Vermont, creates pre-made
packages of ingredients for cookies, brownies, soups, bread, hot cocoa and chai
tea, as well as bird seed and dog treats, for his local business Purely
Patrick, through which he offers customers beloved items with a 'taste of
Vermont'.
'Patrick’s job provides him with a feeling of self-worth
and dignity, which is priceless,' his mother Mary Anne told The Mighty.
Patrick, who uses a pouring device activated by a switch he
controls, explains on his website: 'My hands "see" what my eyes
cannot.'
The assistive technology allows Patrick to layer the
ingredients for his company's treats into bags and jars before they are wrapped
with ribbon and given a tag.
He sells his specialty products at local craft fairs and
farmers' markets, as well as on his website, with each package costing between
$5 and $8.50.
